Obsessed with Cryptids, Magic, the Paranormal, and Aliens - Due to having supposedly been abducted by aliens when he was a baby, Dib's obsessed with all things having to do with aliens and the paranormal. He's been researching the topics since he was old enough to read and has amassed a vast knowledge on the subjects. He's also acquired a lot of practical knowledge, especially over the last year, since Zim came into his life. Though his knowledge of magic seems to be more on the rudimentary level. But real magic in his world also seems to be very sparse, convoluted, ridiculously dangerous, and often just ridiculous.
Intelligent and Inventive - Like his dad, Dib's a genius and is particularly adept with science and technology. He's capable of making his own high-tech contraptions from scratch, and can even reverse engineer or hack into alien tech (for example; he was able to fix up, hack into, and fly an alien spaceship that landed in his yard).
Investigator - Dib's looked up to the grizzled detectives from old noir detective movies since he was little, and fancies himself akin to them (it's the whole reason he loves wearing trench coats so much). He's honed his own talent for research and investigation while chasing after cryptids and debunking the frauds in the paranormal community. And it's come in handy while facing off against Zim. He's had to learn how to sneak past his security to get deep into Zim's lab, has made and implemented his own surveillance devices, and learned to piece together clues to try and stay one step ahead of Zim and his plans for world conquest. He's not perfect at it, he's a bit too impulsive and prone to grandstanding at inopportune times, occasionally makes mistakes like leaving the flash on while trying to covertly take photos, or over thinks the alien's plans and ends up giving him ideas when he questions his logic or reveals that he "knows what Zim is up to". But he's still capable of outpacing most of the adults of his world in both the investigative and paranormal fields (though...that's honestly not a high bar to drift over, considering how oblivious most of the people in his universe tend to be).
Immune to Having His Memories Altered - His sister Gaz implanted something in Dib's head that keeps him from having his memories tampered with, even by time manipulation.

Dib is an inquisitive, precocious kid, whose personality is an intricate patchwork of bad coping mechanisms, trauma responses, and various neuroses, all slathered together with a glue of stubborn resilience, daddy issues, a well-earned frustration with authority figures, and a hero complex the size of Texas.
First impressions of the kid are that he's distant, spacy and cold with most people, barely paying attention to others unless he hones in on something worth paying attention to. It doesn't take much for him to warm up and get talkative, though, just bringing up the subject of aliens and the paranormal will do it. He’s very excitable and passionate, and can easily go from hardly talking to hard to shut up.
Still tends to be pretty spacey and borderline self-absorbed, if not intensely (uncomfortably) focused and throwing out a barrage of questions. He's often not the easiest person to get along with. He's incredibly blunt and nosy, can be a bit of a pretentious know-it-all at times, and doesn't seem to have much respect for other people's time, space, or property. Though he at least tries to do better if he's called out on this. Overall, he comes off as not very socially aware, and overly self-conscious about how people perceive him.
Dib is a lonely kid who doesn't really know how to interact with most people, and is often suspicious of people's intentions, since anytime he's let someone get close to him, it has come back to bite him. He's mostly given up on connecting with kids his own age since all his classmates just think he's crazy and annoying (or he thinks they're annoying), but he also has a bad habit of desperately flocking to any positive role model that gives him the time of day.
The closest thing Dib has to a friend, is the alien who wants to kill him and destroy the human race. The two absolutely hate each other, but they're also the only ones who understand one another, and they give each other purpose. Every time we see an example of Dib giving up on his fight against Zim, Zim just gives up too, and Dib's life becomes boring and empty. While the stakes are very real (Zim has destroyed or taken over the earth and murdered Dib on multiple occasions over different universes and timelines, and likewise, Dib has killed Zim in at least one universe), and they're both taking it seriously, it's almost like it's all a very high-stakes game.
A lot of Dib's issues with trust and his unhealthy need for approval (that's spiraled into a massive hero complex), are due to his family life. His father in particular.
His relationship with his sister is contentious at best, equal parts co-dependent and abusive. While his dad is not only chronically neglectful, but has singled Dib out as the black sheep of the family due to his "unscientific" love of the paranormal. The man constantly calls him crazy to his face, never sticks up for him or believes him about anything, even when he has the proof sitting right in front of him, and he once advocated for him to be committed to an asylum for the rest of his life. His father is honestly the biggest motivating factor for him to keep throwing himself into danger to save the world from Zim (outside of the obvious motive of just not wanting his home planet to be destroyed or enslaved).
If he can just keep saving the world on his own, and collect the right kind of proof, surely one day, he'll be able to show his Dad and everyone else the truth, and he'll finally earn the respect and affection he craves.
